'Am I missing something'

Year five of the SW Area History of Arts course will be held in Castle House, Castle Green on five consecutive Thursdays beginning on February 20th 2020.

Lecturers Geri Parlby and Jeni Fraser will again be delivering this course, providing an introduction and analysis of artistic styles, movements and media.

Running over five full days, each week we will be taking an in depth look at the specific artistic theme.

If you have not managed to come to previous course, there is no disadvantage in attending this year since each individual day will be addressing an individual subject.

Here are the details of the list of subjects each day.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

A course investigating aspects of art and their interpretation taken over five consecutive Thursdays from 20th February 2020.

Course Tutors - Geri Parlby and Jeni Fraser

Venue - Castle House (Museum of Somerset), Castle Green, Taunton.

Coffee from 10.30 am; sessions begin at 11.00 am. Finish time approx 3.30 pm.

Fee for the 5-day course - £130  NB Non members are welcome to apply for this course

The topics covered:

20th February. From Hogarth to The Birth of Fleet Street. The early art of propaganda and political satire.

27th February. Fifty Shades of Red. How the colour red has inspired artists throughout history.

5th March. Obelisks, Hieroglyphs, Sphinxes and Pyramids: Egyptian Revivalism in the 19th and 20th centuries

12th March. A Femninine Hand - Women artists across the ages.

19th March. A brush with death: Medicine in Art throughout the ages and a toxic tale of poisonous paint pigments.
